Painting on canvas with acrylic media, using an oil painting technique, combines self-expression along with reality. I find that anything that can tell us a story and stir our emotions has become my passion. Within the walls of my studio my mind is free to travel anywhere. Using vision along with my palette of colors and brushes the world around us comes to life on canvas. One of my greatest joys is having the opportunity creating commissioned works for clients where their personal
memories come to life and are treasured for years to come.

My style of paintings is far reaching from traditional flat fine art, touches of abstract painting, along with development of 3-dimensional art. Sculpting each piece using terracotta clay, bound with mastic, with acrylic colors, gives my canvases 3D realism to the viewers overall vision and reality of touch.

In my signature technique of the "lava" series, I celebrate the fluid energy of hot molten glass. By using the color spectrum and trapped air bubbles, I explore visual dimensions of massive transparent glass and reflective interiors.

Leon Applebaum’s  journey of working with glass has been my teacher since 1967 in Toledo, Ohio.  It has been a great honor to be creatively and productively involved with the material of glass and to be part of the international glass family. Since graduating from Rochester Institute of Technology in 1976, my passion for glass and the New York Finger Lakes Region have inspired me to focus on color balance,  texture and form in my blown and cut glass art. In my contemporary sculpture series, I use glassblowing as a means, not an end. I use cooled blown pieces that are cut into elemental forms. I shape and imprint the glass with hand tools both while the glass is hot and molten as well as after it has cooled with cutting equipment. With the cold working techniques, I transform the blown work into a contemporary point of view. The "Transformation" sculpture series use the circular form to reflect the cyclical nature of life.

I enjoy the meditation of making the blown vessels and the creative search in my sculptures.

This counter size cutting board is made of walnut with a handle of holly assembled with waterproof glue. It has a food-safe finish of walnut oil.

David has been working in our Woodshop Studio since he visited in the 1970’s and his passion for wood-turning has developed into a masterful art. David also manages the Orchards, and Publicity department for the Guild.

How to Care for Your Cutting Board

• Cleaning the board: Clean the surface with a wet rag or sponge, using a mild soap when needed. Dry thoroughly with a cloth. Do not run the cutting board through a dishwasher or let it soak in water.

• Re-oil as needed: Whenever your board starts to look dull, apply a thin coat of mineral oil to the entire clean, dry surface. Let the oil soak into the board and wipe off any excess oil after approximately ten minutes. A well cared for board will last many years.

Cool Waters

Nancy Lane

Canandaigua, NY 14424

(585) 298-1471

www.nancylanestudio.com

Is an original 11 x 14 oil painting of Canandaigua Lake  painted on location at Granger Point. It is framed in a 2” wide solid mahogany wood frame.

Nancy Lane - is a lifelong nature lover, I find most of my ideas by being outdoors. I develop what I have seen and experienced into a painting to express a feeling or share beauty.  Sometimes, the way light falls on the land suggests an emotion that I want to recreate in a painting. Other times, I'll suggest a story in the way subjects are arranged in a scene. My paintings explore a deeply felt connection to nature-- and hopefully encourage that impulse in the viewer.

I have been involved in the arts all my life. I spent 30 years as an illustrator of award-winning picture books that celebrate the human-animal bond. Several years ago I returned to oil painting and began painting outdoors. Whether in the field or in the studio, the subjects I choose to paint are about empathy for nature and animals.

Leaf Impressions

Annie Schliffer, Master Potter

Rochester Folk Art Guild

1445 Upper Hill Road

Middlesex, NY 14507

585-233-8140

aschliffer@gmail.com

This is a stoneware vase. The decoration on this vase is made from the imprint of fresh leaves gathered from the woods, fields and gardens around the Folk Art Guild farm in Middlesex. First the pot is thrown on the wheel, then the leaves are pressed into the clay and blue slip is brushed over the leaves. The vase is dried and then bisque-fired. The leaves burn away, leaving only their imprint and outline. An iron slip is applied to accent the imprinted veins, then the entire vase is dipped in ash glaze and high fired.

Annie Schliffer, Master Potter, began her apprenticeship at the Folk Art Guild in 1972, and gradually became a studio potter and teacher of many apprentices and students. She works at the Guild in the Pottery Studio most every day, taking time out to visit other potteries in many countries and seeing her grandchildren in the US.

Barb Rathbun

9066 Eelpot Rd., Naples, NY

585-944-2587

barbrathbunphotography@gmail.com

A lifelong resident of the Finger Lakes, Barb has been doing portrait and landscape photography for several years. Her work also explores infrared photography and encaustics, often combining photos with encaustic methods.

This is a 12”x12” encaustic painting. Encaustic, which is hot wax painting uses a mixture of beeswax and resin (encaustic medium). Oil paints, inks and pastels can be added to enhance the piece as well as decorative papers, etchings and transfers. To incorporate photography into this process, Barb prints one of her original photos onto Japanese rice paper and embeds this image onto a substrate using encaustic medium. The encaustic process allows the artist to give a piece unusual depth, and because of the unpredictable nature of hot wax, each piece is unique!

Red Flower

Sam Rathbun

9066 Eelpot Rd., Naples, NY

585-944-2587

srathbun01@gmail.com

This is a beautiful 6.5" X 12" oil painting on a wood panel. Sam is a multidisciplinary artist from the Finger Lakes. Rathbun recently received her MFA in Fine Art from UC Davis and has shown both nationally and internationally. She lives in Naples where she paints in her studio when she is not busy teaching, working on her family farm, or looking for stories in the fields and forests that surround her home.

Her work examines a version of rural life through a contemporary perspective that plays upon traditional notions of pastoralism. She seeks to reveal aspects of agriculture and the adjacent wilderness that are raw, brutal, tender, seductive, and which represent an interconnectedness between humans and the non-human other.
